The Pages of Adventure

 THE PAGES OF ADVENTURE

by Coach Frank Sagasta

The way education is viewed in America has shifted over time, and there are several reasons or factors why some parents, guardians, and students seem to lack respect or value for it today.  For better terms, maybe those individuals didn't see the adventure, or perhaps they got lost on the journey?

I have come to believe with a strong conviction that learning is more than just acquiring knowledge.  It's a transformative journey that shapes our minds, bodies, and ultimately our lives.  It builds character.  It builds integrity.  It builds confidence and opens doors to endless possibilities.  For students and parents alike, embracing the learning process can be the most powerful tool for personal growth and future opportunities for achievements or successes.

Master of Yoga B.K.S. Iyengar once said: “Ignorance has no beginning, but it has an end. There is a beginning but no end to knowledge.”  I am convinced that he knew that if mankind would be willing to learn.  That would end ignorance, stupidity, and human errors.  of course, not entirely, but would limit our capacity of wrongful thinking.  Hence, the new beginning.  Pythagoras the mathematician and philosopher said it this way, “The beginning of every government starts with the education of our youth”

I don’t know how much time we have on this earth.  I don’t know how long I must guide you as my children.  But one thing I do know is that learning places significance in both an individual and society.  I guess what I’m trying to say, is never be discouraged when you don’t know something.  Stand with confidence and make time to learn it.  Whenever I started something, or someone asked me to take on something new.  I made it a point to learn about it.  Why?  Because it boosts your value and self-worth. When you make learning a priority or urgency, you gain energy, and it feels good when you achieve it too!!

Students:

To my knowledge and understanding.  Learning is not confined to textbooks, screen time behind computers, and certainly not just classroom walls.  It's a lifelong journey an adventure that extends far beyond academic achievements.  Far beyond the academic accolade.  When students approach learning with curiosity, enthusiasm, and understanding.  They develop critical skills that will serve them throughout their lives.  Problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, communication, and adaptability are just a few of the essential skills cultivated through a genuine love of learning.

I am not the perfect teacher nor will ever claim to be—there is still much to learn and so little time.  But there are a few things that I do know, and they’re certain.  Learning teaches resilience.  Learning leads to confidence.  Learning brings new beginnings.  Learning opens the door to new opportunities.  Each challenge a person overcomes, and each new concept he/she masters becomes a building block.  Students who understand that mistakes are opportunities for lessons, growth development, and a huge part of a growth mindset will help navigate life's complexities with grit, patience, compassion, and determination.

I challenge each student to never let their learning lead to just knowledge.  Let your learning lead to actions.  Please, understand that learning will require some discipline, sacrifices, and daily attention.  It will only help prepare you for those new beginnings.  Always use that capability, and you’ll be ready for new opportunities soon.

Parents:

Look, I totally understand and appreciate your feedback.  What I am about to say, might offend some people and I get it.  But try not to get hung up in your feelings.

I know how hard it is to navigate in this technological environment and fast-paced world.  But parents and grandparents play a crucial role in nurturing a love for learning.  By creating an environment that values curiosity, discipline, and education.  Such as asking thoughtful questions, “How was your day? Or what did you learn about today?”  Other questions include: “Who made you laugh or smile today?  What was your favorite part of school?”

If parents and guardians celebrate effort over perfection, sports, or FUCK’N grades.  Parents and guardians can inspire their young ones to become lifelong learners.  This doesn't mean pressuring children to achieve perfect FUCK’N grades, but rather encouraging exploration, supporting interests, and showing genuine excitement about the learning process.  Look, I know we aren’t all college-educated, and I know we weren’t given a manual on how to be successful parents or guardians.  I know that our ego or pride may push us away from asking questions to people outside our comfort zone.

But making time, energy, and effort, and giving them attention to be loved.  Helps them to understand how to ask questions or explore topics together, and demonstrating your own love for learning can be incredibly powerful.  I’ve attended two different webinars this year on subjects of leadership and social-emotional intelligence (SEL).  I have another in February on the damage of cell-phones in school.  Look, I totally agree that learning something new can be complex and something challenging.  One of my favorite quotes happens to be from a hero of mine who once said, “Without struggle, there is no progress.”  I still believe Frederick Douglass is correct.  It is exciting and worthwhile when you learn to navigate through those challenges because you can share that knowledge and experience with others.  When children see their parents or grandparents reading, asking questions, and embracing new challenges, they internalize the message that learning is not a chore, but an exciting journey of discovery.  They see that learning isn’t boring or a waste of time.  They see that learning isn’t a burden, but an advantage.  Learning is ultimately a shared experience.  It connects generations, bridges understanding, and creates opportunities for meaningful conversations and growth.  Whether it is helping with homework, discussing a fascinating documentary, or exploring a new hobby together, the learning journey can be a beautiful bonding experience for families.  PERIOD!!

Remember, learning is not about being the smartest in the room or knowing everything. It's about staying curious, remaining open to new ideas, and understanding that every day brings an opportunity to grow, understand, and become a better version of ourselves.  PERIOD!!

So, embrace learning together – not as a destination, but as a lifelong journey or adventure.

With gratitude,
